As a wetland area, Lonjsko Polje is one of the most endangered habitats in the world. It is also the largest preserved wetland area, not only in Croatia but in the whole Danube basin as well. It is a part of the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, especially as a nesting place of wading birds. Based on the criteria of EU Birds Directive, the area is also part of the Important Bird Areas Program (IBA).

Water - ruler of Lonjsko Polje
The rivers Sava, Una, Kupa, Lonja and Strug meet precisely in the nature park area. Because of their very complex dynamics, floods are unpredictable in this area and can be expected throughout the year, regardless of the season. Downstream of Sisak , the Sava water level can rise up to 10 m. If high waters appear in all of the above mentioned rivers at the same time, the large amounts of water cause floods. The area of the core of Posavina can take hold of two billion cubic metres of water. Therefore the water becomes the ruler of Lonjsko Polje. Local people had to accept that fact.

About us ...
The public institution Lonjsko Polje Nature Park was established in 1998. The Park Management is situated in Jasenovac (100 km from Zagreb) and the Park's Information Centre in the village of Čigoč. The Biological Station is to be reopened in Drenov Bok. The activities of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park are primarily focused on protection, preservation and promotion of the fundamental natural and cultural values of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. Children's education programs have been offered, as well as guided tours for visitors. The Nature Park is the venue of scientific researches, numerous educational and professional workshops and assemblies.
